Looking at what inspires/inspired me alot of the quirks in some of my pieces make alot more sense, I tend to go for softer more pastel colours, and usually opt to feature woman in my work rather than men. I graviate to the soft curves and circles of woman, men tend to me more angular, sharper. Though my style varied in certain respects, like body builds and face shape. What is consistent however is my love and graviattion towards curves and large eyes. I believe eyes are one of the more important things in art mainly because I believe the way people 'look' in the eyes says alot about a person. It can also determine what kind of perosanilty a character will have, for cartoons atleast its a massive indicator. Though most of my perosonal works focus character drawings and thick thighs, I do occasionally branch out into other styles and formats for my work, espeicially as I've become a little more confident. Before I get to colour though most of my drawings begin with sketches, and most of the time i always think the sketch looks way better than the finished piece, though Im confident thats because the sketch is the fisrt think you perfect, and all parts that look perhap dodgey or poorley proportioned is covered by the sccruffy line art and thick lines used to define. Not all of my initial sketches make it to the finished phase but I think its important to show the sketch anyway, as a land marker for my work. I also enjoy playing with line work to define and colour rather than just relying on colour its self. Its been noted I can whip up a sketch pretty quickly, to figure out the posing and positioning of things, I struggle with then cleaning that sketch and creating the finished piece.

As I stated before, one of the careers I was looking into was concept art, primarily video game concepts. I have played video games since i was young, I remeber recieving my step uncles old game boy, and opening my very own brand new nintendo DS on christmas, the kind shaped like a brick, heavy as hell but i spent hours on in. Playing with my virtual dogs and talking to animal Villagers on animal crossing, I recall one calling me a "fat head" for hitting him one too many times with a net, it made me cry, scariest game I ever played. Though it was a long time ago, Im still a gamer, though my taste matured some, I wont pretend I dont own animal crossing and the limited additon switch that came with it, But I will say that I also frequent games like Resident Evil and Apex legends now. Though I watched my father (rather irresponsibly) play the odd Resident Evil game at his house, I was far too young and scared to retain anything other than "scary zombie kills you" though now I find great delight in popping heads off infected and shooting holes in other people online. But one of the most important things for me even now as a gamer is Aestsetic. I admire some of the designs for the B.O.W in resident evil "Why's his arm growing there?" I dont know but its cool right? Illustration and imagery are an important part of telling a story.
15-14 was the age I really started to get into my art, around the time my seizures reared their ugly head, for me it was an escape. My inspirations coming from Anime, my mom was the first to introduce me to anime, I sat down and watched howls moving castle at 9, spirited away at 10 and unknowingly became an early fan of the magical girl genre of anime years before that. The fanatastical worlds these people build with animation was amazing to me. So when I seeked for an escape from my realisty I turned to creating my own. Early Inspiration As I began drawing more, I began to draw less fanart of things I watched or played and began to create my own worlds and characters. Listening to music was a huge aid to that, often times my art would reflect the songs I was listening to or the theme around them. It was around this time I discovered vocaloid, which segwayed me into other world music. My playlists now are a mix of many different types of music. Dont be surprised that if right after listening to elvis you get the sound track for gladiator right after. But my earliest inspiration and drive was Vocaloid, for a breif rundown, vocaloids are really just voice modulators people can use to make their own songs, and they do. Though it was slightly more niche back then, Im sure you've heard the name Hatsune Miku somewhere, she even opened for Lady gaga before. But before that, vocaloids were used as a creative outlet to tell stories or just make good music. some examplesof my favourite as a developing artist were;
These were a major source of inspiration and artistic expression to me (I'll be honest, I still listen to 75% of these songs) Though I still listen and love Hatsune Miku and the artists that create amazing songs for her, she opened many doors to other artists not explcusively japanese but all with similar themes, The use of music and imagery is something Im super into and love. Other songs in mpre recent years have also majorly inspired my personal work.
Though it is embarassing to admit now, and looking back at the dates ALL these songs were posted makes me feel majorly old, I still love these songs and the stories they tell with them. I also can't deny the heavy influence they have had on my work, the aestetic and colours I use today. I can see how the imagery in my more developed taste ressembles my work today, and how my old fancies were similar to what I used to draw. Regardless of how juvenile it was. Media I enjoy is important to me and my work.
Before attending University I had no REAL plan, I knew I enjoyed drawing, animating and creating things, I just didnt know what I wanted to do with it. I had a set of skills I developed over the years and not sure where to go. During my first year of college I studied four subjects; Graphic design, fine art, photography and DT, in our second year we were asked to choose just one subject from the four. For me, hands down, I chose fine art. Only a few other people were in that class with me, but for me the ability to draw, paint and express my self freely was important. In that last year I honed my drawing and painting skills. I liked the idea of being a concept artist. As a big fan of video games and cartoons the idea of being part of that creative process sounded like a lot of fun.
I chose illustration as a (hopeful) segway to this "dream" though when my second year rolled around I began to realise that Illustration was more than drawing pictures and infact involves many different medias. Developing these skills was not only fun but was also and important part if my learning. While I studied I worked part time at greggs to get me through the years, this became difficult due to my health complications so I lost alot of shifts, money was tight as I was pretty much finacially on my own, When times where difficult I actually opened commissions on my deviant art, Specialising in more anime-esk cartoonish work I didnt expect much to come of it at first, small pieces, little money. Then I was given a some what... erotic? commission request. It wasnt an art form I was UNFAMILIAR with, it just wasnt one I ever conisdered going into, but times were tough and I accepted the commission. The researcha and referencing I had to do was unlike any kind i had to do before (IM sure you can imagine) But I got it finished and the client seemed to like it and i certainly didnt question them. That was a long time ago but i have since taken "erotic" commissions, when money was tight (I'll spare you the examples)... though Im embarassed to admit it. Though as my motivation dwindled with art and illustration my commission flow has stopped and Im not exactly sure how eager I am to get back into it. Having learnt more about myself, my skills and reasons why I draw I have began to warm to the idea of using my art in meaningful ways. For a while I've considered going into teaching (as my mother did) I loved kids and naturally (maybe in part to me being on the spectrum) get on very well with children, understanding them and having more patient with them that the average adult. I often found myself being the resident baby sitter at family gatherings. Using my mom as a key connection I began voluteering at the school she worked at. My mom however works at a closed unit, which is a smaller class of students that main stream schools "don't really want" kids that are difficult or even vunerable. I very much enjoyed this experience, and was praised for how well I was doing. After volunteering there I began to feel a sense of wanting to help, and using art is a fantastic way to do that. To encourage vunerable or mis-understood kids and teenagers te express themself as a form of relief or counsil. As someone who has struggled with mental health since I was a teenager I have experience of being tossed around the CAHMS system then istantly dropped the second I turned 16, left alone with my still strained mental health. I want to look into creative therapys for the times talking for one hour a week doesnt cut it. This new passion I developed has influenced the way I thing and produce work, in recent months I've had exactly no motivation to pick up a pencil and draw, though as I look more into working with my mom and going into that kind of work I have foudn the calling of my table getting louder again. |
